Powerball is the biggest lottery game in the United States and is offered in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Its minimum jackpot is advertised at $40 million and ones exceeding $100,000 are frequent. There are many UK lottery sites allowing you to play Powerball online.
Time of Draws
Powerball draws are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Players have until 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time to purchase their tickets although some outlets stop sales earlier. The draw is normally held in the city of Tallahassee, Florida.
Powerball tickets are $2 each.
Whilst Powerball is a US lottery, there is nothing to stop people from around the world participating. The only way to do this is by purchasing your tickets online. In 2016 an Iraqi national won a multi-million Powerball jackpot and was able to claim his prize through the online lottery agent he used.
How to play
The game uses 69 (numbers 1 to 69) white balls and 26 red Powerballs (numbers 1 to 26). The player must choose 5 white and 1 red ball. The red ball may have the same number as one of the white balls. The odds are of 1 in 292,201,338 of winning the jackpot per play. Each lotto ticket cost $2, and $3 with the Power Play option. There are 9 ways to win.
Players have 9 prize options that are won according to the correct match of white and/or red numbered balls. There are 8 fixed prizes and on varying Jackpot:
- Five white balls and one red ball, odds of 1 in 292,201,338, Grand Prize

Choosing the annuity payments has the advantage of having the remaining sum of your jackpot being invested by Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), which operates Powerball, thus making more money for you. This results in a 5% extra return each year.
Three different ticket holders won the largest Powerball jackpot on January 13, 2016. Players in Florida, Tennessee and California split the $1.586 billion prize. This is also the all-time jackpot record for a weekly held lottery.
Power Play is an option allowing players to increase the original prize amounts of all prizes excluding the jackpot. The Power Play add-on feature costs an additional $1 and must be picked at the same time as your Powerball lotto ticket. The Power Play option allows a larger cash prize when a win occurs. For example, the Match 5+0 prize combined with the Power Play option reaches $2,000,000 paid. All prizes bellow Match 5 will be multiplied by a number drawn at the same time. These multipliers are 2X, 3X, 4X, and 5X. A 10X multiplier has been added once until now.
Powerball slot machines
In 2006, WMS Gaming launched a series of slot machines using the Powerball brand licensing. There are 3 Powerball slots; Bamboozled, the Thunder Hawk slot and the Hoppin’ Wild. These are only available at land casinos in the US… You therefore won’t find them online or in European gambling venues. The 3 slots have linked progressive jackpots; this means that the total amount of the top prize is raised simultaneously through the 3 slots.
