Eligibility

Mega Millions is available in 44 states and the District of Columbia, the US Virgin islands and Puerto Rico. Residents of Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada and Utah will have to visit a neighboring participatory state in order to play.

How to play

The Mega Millions is played with a combination of white ‘normal’ balls and yellow Mega Balls that can lead to winning combinations. Players pick 5 numbers from 1 to 75 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 15 (Mega Balls). Players can also simply opt for the Easy Pick that makes a random choice for them. For convenience, players can also choose the Multi-Draw Option, which allows up to 10 consecutive drawings. For this, the player checks “Multi-Draw” box and choose the number of draws. Tickets cost $1 per drawing and are purchased at terminals in licensed authorized shops in the participatory states.

Mega Millions offers an annuity option for its Jackpots. After your initial payment, you will receive a yearly sum for the following 29 years. As Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) will invest the remaining sum, each payment will become 5% greater than the previous one, which exceeds the normal rate of inflation. Jackpot winners can also opt for a lump cash sum as well. Note that all Mega Millions advertised jackpots are based on the annuity, therefore larger than the cash option.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot to date was drawn on March 30, 2012, and was advertised as $656 million annuitised or $462 million in cash. Three ticket holders won this jackpot.

Mega Millions’ 2nd top jackpot was won on December 17, 2013. The $648 million prize was for 2 winning tickets.

Given the probability of hitting the Mega Millions jackpot, many savvy lottery players also play cash raffles with guaranteed winners and limited tickets, resulting in very strong odds. the jackpots are obviously lower, but it gives you a realistic chance of winning a significant prize, like at sites such as Odurn and Thisisthewant.

Megaplier

Megaplier is a multiplier option offered to players upon purchasing their ticket. Mega Millions players, in all its jurisdictions but California, can activate the Megaplier option by paying an extra $1.

By doubling their wager, players have a chance of multiplying any prize but the jackpot by 2, 3, 4 or 5. The Megaplier is drawn by a random number generator (RNG) at the head office of Texas Lottery.
